Terrible Factory Packaging - Broken But Works

So I got this home and took it out of the box. It was immediately clear that the factory packaging was substandard. I suppose it might have been a rough ride, but I'd expect a lamp - yes, a lamp - costing a couple hundred dollars to be well-packaged. Not this one.
Anyway, the top bulb was broken and glass chips were rattling around the metal top of the lamp. There was, however, another bulb included, so I put that in and everything came on okay. But then I noticed that the glass base of the the top of the lamp was broken: a big crack right down the middle, which splits the 5-inch-diameter glass right in two, though it's held into place by the metal tray.
So, in the end, I spent time fishing around for little chunks of bulb and, worse, I quickly discovered I'd been shipped a damaged (if somewhat functional) lamp - all due, it would appear, to inadequate factory packaging.
It takes some assembly - things didn't fit together all that easily because of poorly machined and/or damaged threads in the poles - and would be a lot of trouble to ship back, so I suppose I'll just keep it and make a point of never ordering another one.

Could not even assemble

I should have taken the advice of other reviewers regarding the lack of product quality. You must assemble the a lamp which would not have been a problem if the product was not defective. Two legs screw into the base and one was clearly shorter than the other making it impossible to fasten the retaining nut. I sent the lamp back.

We bought this away from amazon because a web dealer was offering an attractive price plus free shipping and a coupon. The shipment came directly from Lite Source in California (who gets it from China), and we assume that the dealer was nothing more than an order taker. He was useless when it came to assembly issues and we contacted Lite Source directly.
Note the following:
The instructions for this lamp were badly written, incomplete and generic rather than specific to the product.
Packaging was tight but nothing was broken. It took almost 15 minutes just to carefully remove everything from the styrofoam mold and line it up for assembly without damaging any of the parts. All tools were included.
This lamp has four tiny, tiny allen wrench screws that hold the top part to the poles. Two were already in place and, we ultimately discovered, had to be removed and reinserted to get the top to fit. The screws actually have to be carefully placed onto the allen wrench and then fitted into the threads. Don't drop them onto a dark carpet! The instructions said nothing about these screws.
The final assembly steps require:
-removing outer layer of the double sided tape that holds the metal cover onto the lamp base (however the tape comes completely off when the warning labels that cover it are removed)
-fitting the cover onto the base (one try because of the double sided tape)
-turning the lamp upside down (without damaging the top part and bulbs) to fit the poles into the base
-adjusting the length of the poles by unscrewing the threaded part (Lite Source supplied this information by telephone - the instructions said nothing about this adjustment)
-using a wrench to tighten the bolts while balancing the upside down lamp.
Once assembled, the lamp seems to perform as advertised but the upright poles easily twist out of line, and the the top lamp is designed to tilt toward one side instead of being straight up.
Given the high risk of assembly damage and the rather strange appearance, we give this 2 stars.
Not recommended.
