Good lamp

This is a good (but not *great*) floor lamp to place next to a chair or desk for reading. It definitely has its pros and cons, which aren't easy to discern from the product photo.

PROS:
* The 27 watt compact fluorescent bulb (included) provides a cool light source and uses less energy than an incandescent bulb.
* The hardware is very sturdy and well manufactured. It's frustrating when parts aren't machined right and an item is hard to assemble. This is very well built though.
* The on/off switch is easy to reach and it's very large (probably an inch and a half long).
* You can adjust the height up and down. Just make sure you tighten the thumb-screw tightly, or else it will fall back down.

CONS:
* The product photo makes the lamp look black, but it's actually a dark antique brown. It's a nice finish, but make sure you're OK with brown. If you're looking for black, you'll be disappointed.
* It's hard to tell from the photo, but the arm of the lamp only goes up and down. It doesn't articulate forwards or backwards. (But yes, it features both up AND down!)
* The photo doesn't show the power cord, but this is actually a big detraction. If you look at the photo, you can tell that there are two pieces to the lam's arm. The bottom piece screws into the base and is stationary. The top piece supports the head of the lamp and has the power cord threaded through it. If you look at the product photo, look at the bottom end of the top arm. That's where the power cord comes out and dangles freely. It's not pretty.
* The lamp is only usable for a seated area (a desk or a reading chair). The height only extends to about four feet. If you need a taller light source, you'll have to put it on a stand.
Conclusion: Except for the ugly power cord, this is a handsome lamp. It's a shame the photo isn't more detailed, because you really can't discern the classic style of the lamp from the picture. The picture looks a lot more modern (and black), but it's not. And the cool hue of the bulb seems to me to be at odds with the antique finish--a warmer bulb would have been more fitting.
If the dark bronze finish fits your decor, then this is a nice lamp.

I deduct 1 star because it uses what might be considered non standard prong bulbs and not the socket stuff most of us have in our homes. However, you can find these bulbs anywhere, even Amazon. This is the type used in commercial environments like offices. I'm not sure why but perhaps this type of bulb saves those seconds off where we have to screw them in otherwise. Maybe in a larger setting with many bulbs this might be much appreciated. Lord knows I changed out 20+ screw bulbs moving into an apartment just to have nice white light.
Good construction, lovely metal finish and a hefty base. Wife and I love using this as a gentler reading light. We have it cast up towards the ceiling.

Summary: An attractive, sturdy floor lamp that produces ample amount of white light (or, so-called "daylight spectrum"). The wattage of the lamp--even though energy efficient--is overkill for simple reading purposes, while the height of the lamp is too short for room lighting purposes. Therefore, this would be best utilized as a lighting source for a desk.
PROS:
- Solid base--will not tip easily
- Ample "cool" light is perfect for covering an entire desk
CONS:
- Lamp arm does not bend--it only moves vertically
- Screw that hold arm in place must be tightened well
- Cord comes out of the arm, not the base
