OK lamp, 2 ft. tall, gets very hot.

Fully extended upwards this lamp is 2 ft. tall. It's a bit over-sized for my computer desk, and I need to keep it in the corner to keep it from blocking the screen. Still, with a 60 watt bulb it produced an excellent light for writing checks or reading printed material, and it maneuvers easily into different positions, although the peg that holds the lamp arm in the weighted base is a bit wobbly. There's a screw to keep it from coming out, but it rotates a bit too freely with a bit of a wobble. Still that's just a minor flaw.
The major flaw in this lamp is that with a 60 watt, or even a 40 watt incandescent bulb, the metal shade and housing gets very hot. I've had this lamp a month or so and when it's on for more than a half hour I can smell the lamp over-heating. It's also very hot to the touch. The metal shade is close to the bulb, and the shade and top are not vented in any way, so there's nowhere for the heat to go. The metal of the shade and housing retains the heat of the bulb.
In order to try to eliminate what worries me about the heat produced by this lamp, I just ordered an led light bulb on Amazon: "Kobi Electric 07166 - LED-AR-13W800-50 Dimmable LED Light Bulb".
This led light bulb is advertised to heat up to about 85 degrees F. (less than body temperature), while the surface of a 60 watt bulb is close to 400 degrees F (like the inside of an oven), and a 40 watt bulb is over 300 degrees F. I didn't want a florescent bulb in the house because of the mercury if it breaks. I'm hoping the investment of another $20 for a 13 watt led bulb that is supposed to produce the same 800 lumens as a 60 watt incandescent bulb, but without the heat, will make this lamp a keeper. I ordered the led bulb that produces a 5000K white light which is closest to daylight, although they also make one which is 2800K that produces a warmer light similar to the 2700 K light color produced by a Reveal incandescent bulb.

Great Lamp for Dorm room

I bought this for my son for his dorm room, it takes regular bulb, and he is really happy with this. It works great for him for him since his desk is under his bed, and he can adjust this lamp in many ways.

I was looking for a lamp for my desk/workspace, and this fits the bill. The dimensions listed above are true to size. The arm of the lamp is highly adjustable. It bends and rotates at the base. The lamp head can also rotate. I found that sometimes it slides back, but I'm sure that is due to the extra oil on the joint and will stop with some wear. The switch (located at the top of the head of the lamp) is very easy to turn, which is good because the lamp tends to get very hot and it's not a place I want my hands lingering. As noted by the other reviewers, the "green" lightbulbs are too long to fit under the lamp head, which makes them look weird. I'm sure the manufacturers of these green bulbs will eventually make a smaller size that will be perfect for this lamp. In the meantime, I prefer the old lightbulbs anyway. I am very happy with this purchase.
